The End by Samuel Beckett (05.11.2025)

Samuel Beckett’s The End – “breathtakingly human”

According to the New York Times, Gare St Lazare Ireland are “the unparalleled Beckett champions”, leading the way in staging Samuel Beckett’s plays and prose.

GLAS has been hosting them in Geneva for twenty years and we are delighted to bring you this new production of The End, which Beckett wrote in 1946 and is presented here in the form of a solo monologue, beautifully performed by Conor Lovett, directed by Judy Hegarty Lovett.

Conor Lovett relishes the pauses in Beckett’s rich prose and makes the most of the piece’s black humour. He is at once a humble and commanding presence as the nameless protagonist, a homeless man who has been ejected from the institution that has been caring for him and must now fend for himself with just the clothes on his back and a small sum of money that he will soon be swindled out of.

Proceeds from this event will go to the Edith Wilkins Foundation for Street Children in Darjeeling.

What the critics said:

“Breathtakingly human” – The Daily Telegraph

“Lovett’s character offers us the simple truth that to be human is to be funny” – Edinburgh Guide

“Conor Lovett’s command of the stage is so apparently effortless as to be relaxing, except that with Samuel Beckett one can never relax. With The End the result is comedy, sly and biting…” – The Irish Times

“Conor Lovett has refined his technique and his empathy to a degree, which surely makes him one of the world’s leading interpreters of the work.” –  The Sunday Independent

“Transformative” – The Stage
