The Life and Times of Paddy Armstrong (23.05.2026)

On 22 October 1975, the Guildford Four were convicted of bombings carried out by the Provisional IRA. They were Paul Hill, Gerry Conlon, Carol Richardson and Paddy Armstrong. Their innocence was accepted by the British Courts after they had spent 15 years in prison. Gerry Conlon’s story was told in the Oscar-winning film In the Name of the Father in which he was portrayed by Daniel Day-Lewis. The story of Paddy Armstrong has now been brought to life by the actor Don Wycherly based on the book by Mary Elaine Tynan Life after Life.

Wycherley writes: “I had the privilege of spending time with Paddy and his wife Caroline while preparing for the role… I listened to his stories – some painful, others filled with mischief and warmth. These conversations gave me insight that no book or archive could provide. As an actor, portraying someone real – especially someone still very much alive – is a responsibility I take seriously. I worked to capture his voice, his movement, his spirit. Paddy’s story is one of survival, but also of hope.”
