For Christmas this year GLAS gives you the gift of music from five outstanding musicians. The legendary interpreter of Celtic song, Cathy Jordan (pictured right), will accompany the New Road ensemble: a unique blend of the plaintive Irish uilleann pipes, fiddle, harmonica, whistles, 5-string banjo, guitar, mandolin, jaw harp and bodhran (Irish percussion instrument). They explore musical roots that stretch from Ireland to the Appalachian mountains encompassing tradition and the blues.
This new configuration of world class musicians is appearing in Geneva for the first time. New Road’s first CD, “Stone Walls and Street Lights” was released in June this year to critical acclaim. Leonard Barry is recognised as a master of the soulful sound of the uilleann pipes and was named Male Musician of the Year in 2015 by Irish American News. Rick Epping from California is one of the world’s leading harmonica players; “I’ve never heard better” says Grammy Award winner, Doc Watson. Andy Morrow’s fiddle playing has been described as “sweet and majestic.” Shane McGowan is renowned in world music, particularly for his guitar playing with the Indian percussionist Zakir Hussain.
All in all, it promises to be an exciting Saturday night of live music in the heart of Geneva. A convivial occasion which will include the usual refreshments, Irish smoked salmon on fresh home bread, and the usual range of beverages. The GLAS Christmas raffle sponsored by Charly O’Neill’s pub will also be part of the evening.
All proceeds will go to the Edith Wilkins Foundation for Street Children in Darjeeling, India.
