Jigs, reels and songs aplenty rang out in the old town of Geneva yesterday as GLAS welcomed a full house inside the hallowed walls of the Lutheran Evangelical Church on the Place Bourg de Four.
The traditional Irish music trio Tulsk electrified the audience from the start. The interplay between Peter Molloy on flute, Sean Regan on fiddle and Declan Easkin on guitar lifted the roof in a way that no preacher could hope to match.
They were joined on-stage by the wonderful Pauline Scanlon from Gaelic-speaking west Kerry singing songs from the rich tradition of Irish music. Galway newcomer Niamh Regan sang her own compositions with a sweet soulful voice, accompanying herself on the guitar.
There was a standing ovation at the end and CHF 4,600 was raised for the Edith Wilkins Foundation for Street Children with the support of a private sponsor and Charly O’Neill’s sponsorship of the raffle.
Unusually, the show got underway at 17:00 to allow rugby fans plenty of time to get in front of a television to watch the great contest between Ireland and South Africa. This timing proved very popular with many GLAS supporters and not just because of the rugby. It put people in a great mood for the rest of the evening.
The concert ‘Songs from Ireland – Old and New’ was a collaboration with Culture Ireland and Caroline Edwards of Tourbo Music.
